![]() I created some spreadsheets and started mapping some simple data (not as detailed as the ones below) and started looking at teams who were effective from set-pieces (both defending and attacking). So I began to do some research and found some clubs were indeed paying attention to set-pieces, including Midtjylland who had won the title for the first time in their history after focusing on set-pieces. Relegation or staying up - yet I felt clubs were missing a crucial aspect of the game. Now in football, that's potentially the difference between 1st and second. 3% of 195 corners would equate to roughly 6 goals from corners - a single 1% increase on that figure would net around an extra 2 goals per season. If we look at the Premier League in 17/18 each team on average had 195 corners. After reading the football book The Numbers Game (where I believe I first found out about the 3% rule) it got me pondering - if on average 3% of corners end in goals - why aren't teams focusing on them more to boost that number up? I was convinced most teams didn't spend much time on corners (as well as other set-pieces) and as such, there potentially a huge advantage to be gained. I'm sure a fair few of you are wondering why I've gone to these lengths, if you don't care then please scroll down, I promise I won't be offended! Over the last 6/7 years I've taken a huge interest in football coaching (currently FA L2 qualified with plans to take the UEFA B in the near future) and analytics and hope that this is essentially my future. My reasons for only focusing on the first phase (my data for the Conference where I work is different) is simple - that's what I wanted to focus on to form the basis of my articles. The ball doesn't leave the penalty area after being played into it.The ball hits the net equal to or less than 5 seconds after the corner is taken. This is a question I gave a lot of thought about and came up with the following criteria: It counts as a goal from a corner as long as the following is achieved: Now obviously there's a big question that needs to be asked - What exactly is a goal from a corner? Do you only count the first touch? What if someone heads the ball towards goal, the ball is saved and someone pokes it home from a yard out, isn't that still a goal from a corner? What if it’s cleared and then crossed back in? Goal Difference - The goal difference from corners scored/conceded.Corner Conceded % - Number of corners faced divided by number of goals conceded from corners.Number of corners conceded - How many goals each team has let in from corners.Number of corners faced - Pretty obvious, the number of corners each team has faced.Corner conversion % - The number of corners taken divided by the numbers of goals scored.Number of corners scored - again, pretty simple, although more on this below. ![]()
